New Team Vicar appointed.

During November we were delighted to be able to appoint Revd Thomas Wharton as a new Team Vicar with special responsibility for Smannell with Enham Alamein, and as Chaplain of the Enham Trust.  He will move to Enham in January, and be formally licensed at the end of the month.  A Service of Welcome and Celebration of the creation of the new Team will be held at St. George’s, Enham, with both the Bishops of Winchester and Basingstoke attending, early in March.

When Thomas is Licensed, the parishes of Knights Enham and Smannell with Enham Alamein will be re-structured as a Team.  I will be Team Rector, and Thomas will be licensed as a Team Vicar with special responsibility for Smannell and Enham.  We much look forward to welcoming Thomas and his family, and I am much looking forward to working with him.

Letter from Thomas Wharton

Yorkshire to Hampshire

As I’m writing this it’s one of those rare November days in the Yorkshire Dales where the clouds and mist have briefly gone on holiday and the hills can be seen in their full glory. Having lived in a variety of places - Cheshire, Glasgow, Mafikeng in South Africa, Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire where I am presently in Grassington near Skipton - I always enjoy getting to know what makes each place special.

Before I went into ordained ministry I was a cellist and it was music that opened up doors and saw me travelling here there and everywhere. I worked with orchestras around the UK and in South Africa and also taught music in schools. It was also through music that Vessi and I met – in fact we could hardly help it! Vessi is a violist and she used to sit right next to me in a chamber orchestra in South Africa. Vessi, in case you’re wondering, is short for Vessela which means ‘merry or joyful’ in Bulgarian which I think sums up Vessi quite well.

We have two boys Anthony and Michael. Anthony is our eldest and is 11 going on 16. He like many boys of his generation is very technologically minded – I always ask him for help when I get stuck on my computer. He plays violin, drums and percussion and has loved being part of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Team which regularly goes climbing, orienteering and walking up hills in the night.

Michael is 7 and is also very nifty with the computer. He enjoys reading and seems to get through an enormous amount of books for his age. Both seem happy and excited about the prospect of moving even if it is on the level of “is there a garden? Will I have my own bedroom?”

As for me, well I am very excited about moving into Enham Alamein and Smannell. Vessi and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit in November and are grateful for the warm welcome we received. I’m really looking forward to every part of the job - settling into community life in the villages and school, working with the Enham Trust and being part of the wider Knights Enham Team. From first impressions I can see this is a wonderful place to live and I look forward to working with you and with colleagues in the team. Hopefully we can celebrate what is cherished and special and also look to grow in new ways appropriate for the wider community.

`PEARL OF AFRICA' UGANDAN CHILDREN'S CHOIR

It was a joy and privilege to welcome this very special African Children's Choir to our Church Centre on Tuesday 25 November.  They performed a hugely vibrant and dynamic selection of songs and dances from East and Southern Africa.  Over 120 people watched as the Centre echoed to the sound of African harmony and drums and dance.  In-between the songs, we heard some very moving stories from the children themselves, most of whom are orphans, and are being educated by a Childcare foundation of schools in Uganda.  It was humbling and moving to be reminded of how such joy and faith and thanksgiving is possible, in the face of profound hardship and difficulty.  If you want to read more about the Choir and the work that they are raising funds for, see their website: www.pearlofafrica.org.uk.  It is also possible to sponsor a child - over 3000 orphans are currently being housed, fed and schooled by the charity.

This was the last performance of the Choir in Andover, having spent a week giving concerts in the area, and doing workshops in local schools.  They went on to finish their UK tour and were to be performing the following evening at the International Centre in Birmingham.

If you ever get the chance to see this choir, or a similar one, don't miss it!  Our humble Church Centre has probably never witnessed anything like it, and the evening will be remembered for many years to come!

Flower Festival 2008

We held a very successful Flower Festival on 5th and 6th July.  Strawberries and cream were served at the church each afternoon.  Saturday was a beautiful sunny day and despite torrential ran on the Sunday we raised over £550 for church funds.  The Festival ended with Songs of Praise, which made a fitting end to the event.

Both days were well attended and many old friends came to support us, rekindling many friendships.

In addition to flower arrangements by our own church members we had displays from three other churches, Smannell, Charlton and St Michael’s, Weyhill Road. Friends from London and Salisbury, and Vigo Road Nursery also provided displays.

We received generous support from local traders.

Sterling work was done by everyone involved ,from collecting tables, chairs and tents, to serving teas, welcoming people and last but not least the ticket sellers.

We are very grateful to everyone who helped in any way, and to all who visited the festival over the weekend.

Archbishop’s Visit to Knights Enham Parish

It was a huge privilege to welcome the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Parish of Knights Enham – his first appointment as part of a busy 2 -day pastoral visit to the Diocese of Winchester, during which he was visiting Andover, Winchester and Southampton.  The Parish of Knights Enham, representing as it does, a growing community facing many of the challenges and opportunities of suburban life today, was chosen to illustrate one aspect of the Church’s work in the Diocese.

The Parish of Knights Enham covers all of Alamein Ward, and all the area where the East Anton development is to take place.  It is a place where the Church, despite limited resources and modest buildings, seeks constantly to discern how best to work with and minister to the local community.

The Archbishop started his day with Morning Prayer at St. Paul’s Church Centre in the centre of the Parish, with members of the congregation and representatives of the local schools, before having the opportunity to share with them in discussion.  The Church has a close relationship with all the schools in the parish, with the clergy taking assemblies in all six schools in the parish fortnightly, and with children regularly visiting St. Michael’s Church and the Church Centre as part of their curriculum work.

After time with the congregation, the Archbishop met leading members of the local Council to discuss issues surrounding development, and then visited the ‘Askalot’ Community Information Shop on King Arthur’s Way where he was able to talk informally with people from the Estates.

The Archbishop’s final meeting of the morning was with members of the ‘Turnaround Project’ – representatives of the many agencies working within the Ward at grass-roots level – all of whom are committed to working together to ensure the provision and improvement of facilities and opportunities for local people.   This is an exciting and visionary initiative in which the Church takes an active part.
